Watch These Athletes Take on ‘100 Kilogram Dumbbell Challenge’

In a new video on Gymshark’s YouTube video, a whole host of the brand’s athlete partners take on a grip strength challenge, using a series of dumbbells ranging from 30 pounds to 100 pounds. The test is simple: pick a dumbbell up using just one hand, then lower it with control, and move onto the next one. It’s essentially a single-arm deadlift max: the goal, as you may be able to tell, is to be able to make it all the way up the row of weights to the 100-pound dumbbell.

Nile Wilson, the former Olympic gymnast, is first to go up: he easily picks up the 30 and then the 50, but fails at 70 kgs.

Next up is fitness influencer and entrepreneur Lex Griffin, makes it all the way up to 70 kgs with relative ease, but fails to lift the 100. It’s the same with YouTuber Fergus Crawley, who manages 30, 50 and 70, but falls at the final hurdle.

In each instance, when one of the guys fails to lift the last dumbbell, their instinct is to switch hands, when what’s being tested here isn’t upper body strength, but grip. “Your grip is fatiguing after each attempt,” says Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel. “So you’re switching on the fourth one, because you already torched yourself on one, two and three.”

Bodybuilder Nathaniel Massiah is the first of the group to make it all the way to the end and triumphantly lift 100 kgs, to rapturous applause. He is followed by MattDoesFitness, who “cheats” his way through the first dumbbells by lifting them but then dropping them to the floor rather than lowering them with control–and still fails to lift the 100 on the first attempt, even when he switches hands. He eventually manages,

“My tactic was, if you look at that dumbbell, it’s really long, so in a normal grip it’s probably going to go side to side,” says Massiah. “So I don’t do this usually, but I hook gripped it; you put your thumb underneath, pinch down, and it basically stops it from moving. But it hurt!”
