Since leaning down and refocusing his training around boxing, strongman Eddie Hall has taken every opportunity to work on—and show off—his punching power. Not only has he tested his striking strength and accuracy against a PowerKube, but he’s also eagerly demonstrated it on several of his fellow athletes and celebrities, including fitness model Ryan Terry, singer Peter Andre, and diminutive gymnast Nile Wilson, who was sent flying by a punch to the chest. He once even hit his sparring partner Paddy so hard that he ended up spitting blood.
The latest influencer to step into the ring with Hall for a boxing workout—and inevitable winding blow to the sternum—is bodybuilder MattDoesFitness. “I think it’s important to say that you asked for this, in case anything goes wrong,” Eddie tells Matt at the top of his latest video.
Matt admits to having “zero” skill or experience in boxing, so Eddie starts off by schooling him on basic technique and takes him through a couple of basic drills to get him confident on footwork and striking. Then Eddie invites Matt to punch him in the abs with increasing power and intensity, until Matt is laying into him with 100 percent of his strength.
“It’s fatiguing me more than him,” says Matt. “As if he’s absorbing so many punches, that’s mad.”
This is all preamble, of course, and before long it’s Matt’s turn to be treated like a punchbag by the former World’s Strongest Man winner. This time, though, Matt is equipped with protective padding in order to keep his internal organs from getting pureed. Eddie starts with a series of shots to the abs, then targets his chest, which Matt says is much more painful.
“I feel like there’s a lot of people watching this that will take a lot of gratification in you just punching me loads,” says Matt, once he’s recovered.
