Seahawk XC Teams Head To Mountains

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW cross country teams compete for the third consecutive weekend late Friday (Sept. 17) when the Seahawks head to the North Carolina mountains for Appalachian State’s Firetower Project race at the Don Kennedy Fields near Boone.

The Seahawks will be joined by the host Mountaineers, Charleston, Lees-McRae, UNC Asheville, UNC Charlotte, Elon, Montreat and USC Upstate in the meet. The women are scheduled to compete in a 5K at 4 p.m., followed by the men in an 8K at 4:45 p.m.

The Seahawk teams are hoping to build on the success of their own UNCW Beach Blast last Friday in the program’s first home meet since 2013. The women dominated the race behind graduate student Summer Owens and the men took second place overall at Olsen Park.

“The women did a tremendous job of executing the race plan while scoring nearly a perfect score with their 18 total team points,” said Jeff Klaves, UNCW’s head coach. “This week, we look to take on a bigger field and maintain a pack mentality throughout the race. Passing opponents together leads to big shifts in the team scores when it’s all said and done.

“Training has been going extremely well. Our women are coming off their strongest interval workout of the year on Tuesday. We know times will come if we continue to work together.

“The men continue to put the pieces of the race together. It will be on full display during our first 8K this weekend. We’re committed to the plan and are improving daily. This will be the first time all year that we are at full strength with our full top-7. I look forward to watching them battle and compete throughout the race. With their grit and determination, it’s only a matter of time until we see a breakthrough.”

Klaves and the Seahawks are using this weekend’s trip to prepare for the CAA Championships in late October. “We’re using this as our preparation for handling the travel to Boston, so we can make sure we are sharp when it matters.”

Following Friday’s races, the Seahawks travel to Conway, S.C., for the Chanticleer Invitational on Friday, Oct 1.
