Mike Tyson hammers punchbag as he breaks down Canelo Alvarez’s stunning defeat to Dmitry Bivol

Mike Tyson hammers punchbag as he breaks down Canelo Alvarez’s stunning defeat by Dmitry Bivol… and the former heavyweight champion reveals he told his wife how the Mexican got ‘the basics’ wrong

Boxing legend Mike Tyson has used his fists to explain how Canelo Alvarez got his tactics wrong in his shock defeat to Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Feared Canelo was dominated by Bivol after stepping up in weight to challenge the Russian for his light-heavyweight title, suffering his first loss since he was beaten by Floyd Mayweather in 2013 as a unanimous points decision went against him.

Tyson was ringside at the T-Mobile Arena and has revealed what he told wife Lakiha Spicer as they watched the Mexican slip to the surprise setback against unbeaten WBA king Bivol.

The analytical 55-year-old told his millions of Instagram followers: ‘The basics topple giants. I just think if Canelo was using his jab effectively – hard – the guy [Bivol] wouldn’t have been able to come in.

‘The guy was coming in because he wasn’t worried about Canelo’s jab. So he got more aggressive, he got brave.

‘If he’s not jabbing, he has no defense. If he’s not gonna jab, the guy’s gonna walk right in on him like he did. Next fight – use your jab, different fight.’

Former heavyweight champion Tyson, who is still known for his displays of power in workout sessions on social media, then stepped inside to provide more of his thoughts while thumping a punchbag.

As he shaped in front of the bag in a gym, Tyson mimicked how he felt Canelo should have moved in the bout.

‘Iron Mike’ said: ‘When [Bivol] was jabbing, Canelo should have been moving, slipping the jab, anticipating the combination.

‘If he was slipping the jab, the guy wouldn’t throw the combination. If Canelo would’ve used his jab, I was discussing with my wife [saying], “he’s not using his jab.”

‘Then, the next round, I saw him using his jab, so his corner must’ve been telling him the same thing. I believe if he used his jab, it would’ve been a different fight.’

As well as being the recipient of his mid-fight punditry, Spicer has been Tyson’s wife since 2009 and is the mother of two of his children.

The pair will be interested observers if Canelo and Bivol meet in the rematch both fighters have said they want.

Bivol, 31, vowed he would have ‘no problem’ fighting the pound-for-pound number one again.

Canelo praised Bivol afterwards and said: ‘Boxing is like that – sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but always with your head held high.

‘I stay with the great fight that we offered to the people. We will fight again and we will win again.’

Tyson last fought professionally when he lost to Kevin McBride in 2005, although the American has been involved in exhibition scraps since then.

The ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ drew with fellow great Roy Jones Jr in a fight known as the ‘Lockdown Knockdown’ at Los Angeles’ Staples Center in November 2020.
