How can you train your mental strength through adventure sports?

Enough is said and done about physical fitness. It’s the mental strength that is the burning question. Especially after the pandemic, when we’ve been tested thoroughly, it’s the one aspect we realise needs as much discipline as the physical. 

As witnessed in recent years, bulging biceps, high stamina and physical strength don’t mean a thing if we are not strengthened mentally.

It’s therefore not just our unhealthy food habits, but our junk consumption and monotony at work that add to our declining well being. In the longer run, what helps us go further is keeping ourselves fresh and excited and a new way of achieving those is- drumroll please- the budding industry of adventure sports! 

Why adventure? 

Adventure pushes people out of their comfort zone, delivers a kick of adrenaline and a thrill of a lifetime! It breaks the monotony and shakes one up from the inside out! 

Mental strength refers to the ability of an individual to deliver consistent results and perform to the best of their abilities in tough situations or environments. At school, some of the most hardworking and intelligent students succumb to pressure during stressful examinations. At workplaces, employees often find themselves struggling to deliver the results amid a crunch deadline. It is no wonder then that companies recognise this need and invest in experiential travel for employee off sites to increase productivity and enhance teamwork. 

Bungy Jumping

Bungy in Rishikesh was included as part of curriculum for National Police Academy (NPA) officers, Hyderabad as a character building activity. To be standing at a formidable height of 83 Mtrs, amidst the stunning Himalayan landscape over a tributary of the river Hall, harnessed at the ankle, is as exhilarating as it is terrifying. Overcoming such fears demands tremendous mental strength and gathering it brings out the best among jumpers. A memory they cherish forever. 

The flying fox in the same location which can be done in tandem or with 2-3 people together is a great team building exercise as jumpers are harnessed parallel to the ground and zip through the valley at speeds of upto 160 kmph across a 1 km length, and fly like superman through the experience. 

Training Mental Strength With Adventure Sports

For long, the world of sports was confined to prominent disciplines like cricket, football and hockey among others. These sports were also credited for keeping people fit while bringing excitement in what was otherwise a quite mundane life. But the rise in extreme or adventure sports has led to a major paradigm shift in the sports ecosystem.

Today, adventure sports like bungee jumping, giant swing and water rafting have gone on to become the highly sought after outdoor activities across the globe and continues to break new ground in India. While adventure sports have a tendency to attract people purely for their excitement and thrill quotient, they have also been credited for training the mental strength of partaking individuals.

Since adventure sports are known for relieving stress and alleviating tension, taking part in it has a direct impact on the mental health of the individual. Apart from stress, the dose of adrenaline further enhances the experience, making it more memorable. This, in turn, allows an adventure sports enthusiast to overcome stress and enjoy the moment.

Adventure sports help enthusiasts improve their concentration owing to their ability to mask external distractions for people. By doing so, a person can improve cognitive skills, which can further strengthen their skills related to decision making and critical thinking. Overcoming obstacles and fear are at the cornerstone of building self confidence. In that regard, adventure sports subliminally train people in handling challenges-something that’s crucial to training mental strength.  

Way forward

Given our current lifestyle, eating habits, and work culture, the signs of stress and anxiety, even among youngsters, are quite prevalent. There is a need to prepare ourselves and learn how to combat the depressive feelings that can lead to more detrimental mental conditions. While we surely need to undertake other key measures, the role of adventure sports in that regard just cannot be overlooked. 

Apart from individuals, the application of adventure sports can also do wonders for organizations looking to revitalize and rejuvenate their workforce. By indulging in adventure sports, people can reduce stress hormones amidst the stimulation of endorphins, – the natural mood lifters that are well-known for their ability to keep stress and depression away. That’s one way corporate firms can reshape the minds of their employees to help them perform better and more efficiently.

So, the next time you come across an opportunity to take part in an adventure sport, don’t mistake it for just another senseless adrenaline-infused activity, it is more than that.
