Fitness test for NYPD to become easier following mass retirements, resignations

The NYPD is easing up on the difficulty of one of the tests new officers are required to pass in an effort to bring in new recruits.

In July 2021, new officers were required to complete six obstacles in less than 3 1/2 minutes. The new tests add an additional minute to the test.

Police say the new physical fitness requirements have “been reviewed and approved by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Service and the NYPD will continue to abide by any guidelines issued by the state.”

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick J. Lynch responded as well saying, “There is one clear solution to the NYPD’s staffing crisis, and it is not watering down hiring standards. The city needs to pay police officers a competitive market wage in order to recruit and retain the Finest.”

Since the start of 2022, the NYPD says 746 officers have retired and 614 have resigned. Additionally, 5,838 officers have retired or resigned since 2020, leaving the department ramping up efforts to their recruitment process.
