With the support of the funding received through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, the City of Orillia is launching Silver Sneakers, a new initiative that will bring more senior-focused fitness programs to the Orillia Recreation Centre. The city will also be relaunching its Seniors at Play program at Rotary Place, providing older adults in the community with access to a diverse set of age-friendly recreation activities. Both initiatives are set to begin on Oct. 1, 2021.

“Through the generous additional grant funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are proud to launch Silver Sneakers aimed at keeping our seniors engaged, healthy, and fit across our city,” said Mayor Steve Clarke.

Those interested in participating are invited to purchase a Seniors at Play membership for just $10 a month to gain access to all Silver Sneakers programs as well as Seniors at Play drop-in programs. Memberships can be purchased online at orillia.ca/sun or in-person at the Orillia Recreation Centre, 255 West St. S.

“We are excited to resume seniors’ programs at the Orillia Recreation Centre and Rotary Place this fall through Silver Sneakers and Seniors at Play. Staff and volunteers have been busy planning a great lineup of fall programs, including shuffleboard, carpet bowling, table tennis, exercise classes and more, this really is a great way for seniors to get involved, meet new people and take part in some great activities,” said Jack Mair, Recreation Program Supervisor.

Seniors at Play is made possible through volunteers in our community. Volunteering with Seniors at Play is a great way to get involved, give back to the community, and build connections with like-minded individuals.
